Global data synchronization or GDS as it is commonly known is a technology that was created as a result of several industry groups working together to help resolve the challenges that they had faced in the past with the speed of product data transfer from the manufacturer through to the retailer. In the product data was moved from the manufacturer to the retailer in a system that was prone to much error and was very labor intensive. The reason for this was that everything was entered into the retailer systems manually. By the time the actual entry happened it was often out of date and required to be updated.
