Setting up a kernel-based virtual machine (KVM) is not easy. You will need a lot of heavy equipment, including rack-mount drawers to support different modules. A kernel-based virtual machine is a virtualization infrastructure that can be turned into a hypervisor. In February 2007, it was combined with the Linux kernel mainline. A lot of powerful hardware is required in order to run the KVM properly. You will need a processor with an extension for hardware virtualization. Originally, kernel-based virtual machines only had support for 32-bit processors (x86). However, an ARM port was also merged during the kernel 3.8 window.

    What is a KVM Drawer?

If you are new to the world of servers and technology, this may not make any sense to you. Many times, onsite computer service teams usually order KVM drawers. A rack-mount KVM drawer is essentially a drawer that can be mounted on a rack. The acronym KVM here stands for keyboard, video and mouse. Simply put, this is a drawer that slides easily into rack, allowing you to install a screen, a keyboard and a trackpad or a mouse. The KVM drawer has a very low profile. The display usually folds down (much like a laptop), allowing you to place the drawer flat on its back.

Obviously, the drawer comes in different screen sizes. Since the computers are mainly used to configure different parts of the server, the most common screen sizes include 17, 19 and 20-inch. Some of them can also house larger monitors, up to 24 inch.

When a company orders a server, they have to purchase special server racks. These server racks are usually divided and have rack mounts that allow you to install additional equipment. That’s where the rackmount KVM drawer is installed. In many situations, it is also known as a 1U rack-mount keyboard. The height of the drawer is relatively small, rising as high as 1.75 inches only. The reason why so many companies order rack-mount drawers is because of their smaller size and form factor. They are very easy to install and don’t require an expert to fix in place either.

How to Purchase a KVM Drawer

If you are looking to buy a rackmount KVM drawer, one of the best options available to you is to check the internet. Hundreds of companies now sell rack mounted KVM drawers and also provide delivery services. Many companies usually place large orders (of several drawers). That is why it is important for you to check the sturdiness of the drawer and test whether the monitor housing opens and closes without getting stuck at all. Generally, the drawer is made out of sturdy plastic.
